Total nonfarm payroll employment in the U.S. increased by 272,000 in May — an increase of 97,000 over April’s 175,000. The unemployment rate changed very little at 4.0% (up by 0.1%). Average hourly earnings rose by 0.4% in May, and over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased by 4.1%.
